The G11 coolant originally filled in '80s and early '90s VW's, including Vanagons, was an Ethylene Glycol-based phosphate-free coolant that contained silicates and was blue in color. It is the formulation of the coolant that matters: phosphate-free, which the majority of coolants are today (still double-check the label). Saying "yellow only" rules out all other coolants available when doing a flush, such as the modern purple G13. What I see as fluorescent green, someone else sees as yellow. Going by color alone is not the way to do it. Here's the Monty Python sketch for your viewing pleasure: LiMBO (late model bus club) LiMBO is on Facebook too! John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender" If you are a little shy of fluid after filling, add more distilled water (or even tap water, since you will likely have to add so little). That will give you 4 gallons of 50/50 mix. So to fill either either system - buy 2 gallons of full strength anti-freeze and mix with 2 gallons of distilled water. You'll never get all the old stuff out by the way. Let's change to gallons and round off a bit: The capacity of a Vanagon coolant system is 16.9 qts for the 1.9 and 18.6 for the 2.1 Let's start over so this doesn't sound like a Monty Python sketch. Typical Vanagon owner: half mechanic, half electrician, half no good with fractions. If you do that it will be a 50/50 mix, but you'll end up with 4 gallons, not 2. The green stuff is just fine as long as you change it every two years. That winds up being a 50/50 mix however you want to look at it. Then add two gallons of water to two gallons of ethylene glycol. Prestone Longlife is the right formulation to keep the heads from corroding under the water gaskets. You're going to need two gallons of antifreeze and two gallons of distilled water to properly protect your VW engine. I think I am confused by the wording of your mixture. Okay so I should take back my full strength and get 2 gallons of 50/50?Ģ gallons of full strength plus two gallons of distilled water = 4 gallons of 50/50. Then I could add the 2 gallons with another 2 gallons and have the required mixture. I thought if I bought a gallon of this 100% antifreeze and mixed it with a gallon of distilled it would be 2 gallons of 50/50. "To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive."
